Autism Classes Tarmon N.S.
On the 3rd November 2014 we established an Autistic Spectrum (A.S) Early Intervention Class for pre-school children. A School Age class was established in 2015 and on the 9th January 2017 a second A.S. School Age class opened. The construction of a new modern A.S. Centre was completed in December 2018. The building consists of three Autism Classrooms with changing areas, relaxation areas, a sensory room, a central activities area, a staffroom, a mainstream classroom and a meeting room. September 2019 saw the opening of a third School Age Autism class and September 2020 saw the opening of a second Early Intervention Autism class. In total, the Autism Centre now consists of two Early Intervention classes and three School Age Autism classes. Planning is underway to provide accommodation for the children in the last two classes who enrolled with us. Two new mainstream classrooms will also be constructed. It is widely accepted that Early Intervention is hugely beneficial for children on the Autism Spectrum. Our children develop together socially and academically in a safe and inclusive educational environment, under the professional guidance of the staff. Our pupils benefit enormously from the support of outside agencies who visit the school regularly, providing O.T., Speech and Language and other therapies and services. The children in all of these classes are making great progress, thanks to our wonderful pupils and the pioneering work of the staff and B.O.M., not to mention the enthusiastic support we receive from all the parents and the local community. All of our pupils have access to the full Primary School Curriculum as we constantly strive for each child to achieve his/her maximum potential. We work closely with the parents to attain these goals. The children in our A. S. classes are invited to avail of the School Transport Scheme provided by the Government. Along with providing a soft area playground for these pupils the school also a has 3-lane tartan running track, an astro turf pitch and two grass pitches for all the pupils in the school. We would like to acknowledge grants from Clár, Leader and Sports Capital towards the enhancement of these facilities. Inclusion of A.S. pupils with the pupils in mainstream is of utmost importance to us here in Tarmon N.S. The establishment of the A.S. Centre has enhanced the learning experiences and social awareness of each and every member of our school community. |
