Apple Crumble
Ms Baggot helped the children pick some apples and we thought creatively about what we could make from our locally sourced ingredients. We used the apples to make a delicious apple crumble. We measured the ingredients carefully, timed the baking and shared them with other children in the school.
Baking
This baking lesson included using text features to locate desired information, reading and synthesizing information, and practicing mental addition and subtraction.
The children used text features such as indexes and glossaries to locate a recipe that fit a given criteria which utilised their creativity skills.
The children read a recipe and compiled a list of needed ingredients and supplies using their teamwork sills. The children were able to follow a recipe as a team to bake something. The children were able to use their leadership skills to use mental math to add and subtract single digit numbers while baking. We discussed where food comes from and we are beginning to understand the cost of food and how to help the environment by shopping locally.

Chicken Coop
The children observe, feed, care for the chickens and enjoy gathering the eggs they lay to use for baking. The children learn how to self-manage and take turns, how to be nice and how to cooperate. The children learn skills of empathy while caring for the chickens as they need to understand what the chickens need to survive. The children were creative in designing a timetable in when to feed the chickens. This project also allows the children to learn about where food comes from and nutrition. The children also showed teamwork and creativity skills when they had to work together to repair the second old coop we had , they went to the hardware shop in town, bought wood, screws etc. The children carried out a survey to see if we would buy more chickens or rabbits- the staff who were surveyed wanted rabbits but the pupils wanted more chickens so chickens it was. The 5th class children went to the local bakery and asked the baker to save the crusts, crumbs etc to feed to the chickens which has proved a success.

The Junior Infant class made wonderful pumpkins that required lots of teamwork, Halloween - The children were invited to bring in €2 each on dress up day for a charity of their choice. After discussion they picked the local Association Supporting People with Special Needs - they raised €300 on the day, also we had a witch walk where the pupils and staff in their halloween outfits paraded around the astro turf pitch outside.

Plants & Soil- In Tarmon National School, the children have been investigating the relationship between plants and soil and recorded their learning points. Teams investigated the soil in different areas such as garden beds, lawns, weedy patches, a compacted area along the edge of a driveway and record their observations. We examined the soil with tools such as rakes, shovels and spades and ensured it was prepared for plant sowing. The children were asked invention-building questions such as, “What do you suppose we could do with this trowel?”
We then worked as a team to sow flowers in our flowerbeds. The children used their problem-solving skills to explore how deep they needed to dig holes and to determine how much water it takes to fill a watering can, and they had to make decisions about where they wanted to plant seeds or plants.
